Windows: «The code is not correct. Try again.» and pending requests (AGW06, AGW08)
Symptom
- «The code is not correct. Try again.» after typing the app code or the offline code.
- «The user name or password is incorrect.» before any request to the phone.
- The request closes and the console shows the reason «wrong codes».
Cause
| Situation | Cause |
|---|---|
| App code refused | An old code (it changes every 30 seconds), a clock out of sync, or another account's code in the authenticator app |
| Offline code refused | A code for another computer, a revoked code, or offline sign-ins used up |
| Incorrect password | The Windows or domain password is wrong; Windows checks it, not the service |
endpoint_logon_closed / AGW06 | The request was already answered, expired or changed method |
endpoint_logon_limit / AGW08 | Too many pending requests for this account on this computer |
Fix
- Type the code shown now, for the right account.
- Check that the phone's and the computer's time are automatic; see Clock out of sync.
- For the offline code, use this computer's code; see Windows offline.
- With too many pending requests, wait for them to expire (a few minutes) and try once.
- Forgotten password: follow your organization's reset process.
When to escalate
If correct codes are refused repeatedly, use «Can't use your phone?» for the helpdesk recovery and report the failure.
