Use your authenticator-app code on Windows
When phone approval is not possible at that moment, you can sign in to Windows with the six-digit code from your authenticator app, as long as the computer can reach the service.
What do I need?
A TOTP code set up on your account: «Protect» › «Trusted devices» › «One-time codes». See Set up an authenticator app. Without it, this option does not work.
How do I use the code?
- Type your Windows password.
- In the panel, choose «Use the app code».
- «Enter the app code» appears. Open the authenticator app where you set up the TOTP code and type the 6-digit code it shows.
- Choose «Confirm».
The panel tells you to open the app on your phone: use the authenticator app where you added your account's TOTP code. The approver app does not show TOTP codes.
To go back to approval, choose «Approve on my phone».
Rules
- Each code is accepted once.
- Three wrong codes end the attempt; start again from the password.
- If the code is refused, «The code is not correct. Try again.» appears. Check the phone's time (the codes depend on the clock).
And without network?
Offline, the panel asks for that computer's offline code, which is different. See Sign in to Windows offline.
