What happens if the service is unavailable?
What stops working?
While the service does not answer, you cannot:
- sign in to the console or to applications that use single sign-on;
- approve requests on the phone (requests do not arrive);
- authenticate to the VPN or Wi-Fi over RADIUS;
- create or change people, policies or settings.
The most common message is «The server took too long to respond. Try again.», or a 503 answer. See Service unavailable.
What keeps working?
| Situation | Keeps working? |
|---|---|
| Sessions already open in applications | Yes, until they expire in the application |
| Windows sign-in | Yes, in offline mode, with offline codes, for the window set by the policy |
| Windows break-glass account | Yes |
| Privileged access sessions already open | They continue until they end; new ones cannot open |
| Recovery codes | Need the service |
What should the administrator prepare?
- Set a suitable offline window for Windows computers; see Offline policy.
- Keep the break-glass account's credentials somewhere safe and outside the service.
- Keep at least two administrators with a passkey.
- On the VPN, decide whether you want a fallback method during an outage (a risk decision for your organization).
How do I know whether it is a general outage?
If several people and several services fail at the same time, it is probably a general outage. Contact your provider. Do not retry automatically: request limits can slow recovery.
